Abstract

This research paper discusses residential buildings’ environmental performance and the ways to maintain the internal ambiance quality. The research problem has emerged from the lack of research evaluating the kinetic facades’ efficiency in improving the quality of the interior space in hot dry climate areas, in the shade of climate changes worldwide, and high-temperature rates. The study browses the direct impact on buildings which increases thermal load and thus escalates energy consumption. The main research objective is to measure the improvement of energy efficiency and the effectiveness of kinetic facades in achieving thermal comfort within the building by evaluating it. The study uses the theoretical approach through two axes. First, discussing kinetic architecture and its definitions, the concept of movement and its relation in architecture, types of movement in architecture, and the responsive movement to environmental variables and their patterns. Second, discuss the concept of environmental performance and the design elements affecting it. Then analytical approach will be used to study, analyze, and compare global environmental performance efficiencies assessment systems such as LEED, BREEAM, and PRS and understand the ways to use them. In addition, creating a new environmental measurement system based on combining these three global systems that help assess and measure building environmental performance. The experimental approach is then used by designing a model of a kinetic facade adopting paper folding innovative techniques. Aiming to demonstrate the impact of moving elements on building energy efficiency. This is via examining the experimental model by analyzing and simulating the operation to measure the interior energy consumption using DesignBuilder software. Then the experiment’s result determines the study conclusion and emphasizes the role of kinetic facades in improving buildings’ environmental performance.
