Abstract

Cairo City is considered one of the most important and major capitals in the world, its
urban patterns had been affected by urban expansion and rapid population growth.
This expansion made a negative effect on urban quality life, as the streets’ design became essentially
transport-oriented without considering pedestrians , bicycle users and streets’ livability. This research
investigates the classification of streetscape elements -such as pavements, bicycle lanes, lighting
,crossing lines ,street furniture ,planting- which specifically affect users’ preferences to improve
streets liveability. So theoretical study ,field study and observation had been applied to Abbas
Elakkad Street in Nasr city district to examine streetscape’s elements design guidelines. Also, a
questionnaire for street visitors, users and habitants had been distributed, and a simple regression test
was used to determine the most preferable streetscape element to improve liveability of the streets, so
that it will be more attracted in order to create a context for people to engage with each other and to
participate with social activities in healthy environment. The paper assumes that streets liveability
quality can be enhanced by well designed streetscape elements design based on users preferences. The
results show that unmaintained , non-existent and insufficient numbers of streetscapes elements on
streets affect users’ satisfaction and streets’ liveability negatively. Finally, the paper focused on the
importance of public participation in creating lively streets and proposing the optimum practices to be
conducted by governments and non-government organizations as well.
